Identification:Beavers have a dense, dark brown fur. Their feet are webbed.
Habitat:Rivers and lakes in woodlands
Diet:Herbivore: aquatic plants and cambium (soft tissue of new wood and bark) of hardwood trees
Reproduction:Beavers mate in January and February, with the kits being born in later spring/early summer. They can live to be 20 years of age.
Social Structure:Beavers live in small colonies which usually consist of an adult pair and offspring from one year or more.
Behavior:During most of the year, beavers are active at night, rising at sunset and sleeping at sunrise.
Status:No special status
Interesting Facts:Beavers are the largest of all rodents found in North America. They almost went completely extinct in the 1930s due to the fur trapping industry. Their predators include foxes, coyotes, wolves, lynxes, otters, weasels, and large birds of prey.
