Russian lawmaker proposes renaming US embassy street 'North American Dead End'

Washington's decision to rename the street in front of the Russian embassy struck a chord in the Russian capital, where a national lawmaker proposed this week to retaliate by renaming the Moscow street of the U.S. embassy, "North American Dead End."

The tit-for-tat response came after Washington, D.C., voted unanimously last month to rename the street outside the Russian embassy "Boris Nemtsov Plaza," after a slain critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Nemtsov served in the administration of Putin's predecessor Boris Yeltsin and vocally opposed escalating Russian military aggression in Ukraine. 

Mikhail Degtyaryev, a nationalist legislator of the Russian Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, proposed an initiative in response this week, which would officially change the address of the U.S. embassy in Moscow to "North American Dead End, 1." 

The final decision remains up to local authorities in Moscow, a State Department official confirmed to Washingtonian Magazine.

The lawmaker's office said Monday that Moscow City Hall has received the plan and will review it later this month, according to the Russian state news agency RT.
